This year Christmas and New Year’s Day are both on a Wednesday, meaning refuse and recycling collections usually done on Wednesday will be made the following Saturday.
This means collections due on Christmas Day will now be Saturday, December 28 and collections due on New Year’s Day will now be Saturday, January 4.
Collections may be earlier than your usual time, so please put your refuse and recycling out by 7am to ensure it is collected
All other collections over the festive period will take place on the usual days.
If your refuse collection is missed due to severe weather, extra bags can be put alongside your bin next collection day. This is the only time extra waste can be accepted.
All Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs) will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and January 2.
They will open on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve from 9am-4pm, closing an hour earlier than usual in some cases. Alford and Insch Recycling Centres will open on Friday, December 27 and Friday, January 3. Otherwise all will be open as usual.
Please be aware that over this busy period containers at recycling points may be fuller than normal, particularly at busy supermarkets. The Council is said it is working hard to service all recycling points as often as possible. The big household waste recycling centres in Ellon and Inverurie might be a better bet if your local recycling bins are near full.
Some hints and tips for keeping recycling points clear and ensuring council vehicles can access them:
-
Spread recycling out over the festive period if possible
-
Take recycling to an alternative recycling point (busy sites may have signs pointing you to alternatives)
-
Please don’t leave materials lying outside recycling containers – it’s unsightly and in bad weather materials can blow around causing more litter in the surrounding area. If you can’t use another recycling point that day, please take it home and try again later.
- Do not park in a position that prevents council vehicles reaching containers to empty them
If the Council miss your recycling collection, you may put bags of extra recycling materials alongside your bin or box. There is no limit to the recycling material you can leave for the Council.
If you do not wish to store your recycling, please take it to a Recycling Centre or Recycling Point, but do be aware they can be very busy at this time of year.
Don’t forget, when decorations come down in the New Year, you can recycle your Christmas tree free of charge at most HWRCs.
