New retail outlet ready for opening.

Grand plans: Lord and Lady Aberdeen survey the inside of their Formartines venture alongside John CooperA restaurant and visitor centre opening this spring is set to create up to 20 jobs in the Tarves area.

Formartine’s is a joint partnership between John Cooper, who owns The Smokehouse in Methlick, and Lord and Lady Aberdeen, proprietors of Haddo Estate.

The centre, which is set to open on 9 April, is expected to create a range of employment opportunities throughout the year for local people.

Ecological building techniques have been used throughout the construction process, using Scottish larch and granite from the site. All the wasted heat from the building is being recycled to produce hot water and the electricity for the building will come from local renewable power generation.

It’s estimated that more than 50% of produce for the retail and restaurant, including smoked fish, game and meats will be from The Smokehouse and Haddo Estate or sourced locally. Seasonally, some of the fruit and vegetables will be home grown in the estate’s walled garden.

Mr Cooper said: “Formartine’s is all about supporting the local community, from the suppliers in our restaurant to the building materials of the centre itself.

“We hope to not only help the local economy with this project, but also the local residents by opening up new employment opportunities.”

1st Udny Guides

1st Udny Guides have had a busy term so far, and currently we are working on our ‘Traditions of Guiding Badge’. The girls have been learning about the origins of guiding and the skills that have been learnt by girls all over the world for many generations. We have been building gadgets with our new knot-tying skills, hoisting the flag and even marching!!

We have also started as we mean to go on with plenty of opportunities for the girls to get stuck in with cooking (our haggis meatballs went down really well, with some guides almost converted to haggis eating-no easy task as I’m sure you all know).

We had lots of fun with our ‘minute to win it challenges’ which encouraged teamwork within the patrols. It certainly was funny watching guides dip their noses in Vaseline and trying to pick up cotton wool with it.

We’ve got plenty planned for the rest of the term; with quizzes, forensic nights and sports relief all coming up. In fact we have so much planned I don’t know how we pack so much into 2 hours, and by then end of it all the guiders are exhausted let alone the guides who have been doing all the running about. After the Easter holidays we hope to get out and about for more activities.

And last, but by no means least, I’d like to say welcome to our new leaders Sandra and Sue who have bravely taken on the Senior Section. Senior section is for girls aged between 14 and 26 and is the next step from Guides. Senior section currently meet every second Monday in Pitmedden hall, to start with the unit is small but I’m sure once the girls start telling their friends how much fun it is our new unit will grow and grow. Guides and senior could not run without the dedication put in by our fantastic unit leaders, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank them all for all their time and effort.

If any girl age 10 – 14 is interested in coming along to guides or 14+ in the senior section please contact Jillian on 843075. We already have some Tarves girls in both units so feel free to come along.

There is also a Brownie unit who meet on Wed at Pitmedden School and a Rainbow unit who meet on Tues at Udny Green school. Just give us a call for more information.

Haddo Park – volunteering opportunity

The friends of Haddo Country Park are seeking volunteers to maintain a wild bird feeding station in the Discovery area just inside the park to try to encourage as many birds as possible to the site and possibly squirrels too.

If you are a regular visitor to the park (i.e. once a week or more), you are just the person we are looking for to help with this.

The task would simply be to spend a few minutes on each visit to fill up the bird feeders with the food provided by us.

If you are willing to help please contact Chris Rowe on 01651 821553

We are seeking a number of volunteers to ensure enough helpers to make a consistent effort. It is important the the feeders are regularly topped up to ensure the project works.
