METHLICK FUND RUN 2018 – A THANK YOU

A HUGE THANKYOU to everybody who came along to the 8th Methlick FUNd Run yesterday.

 

We had another excellent turn out this year, with over 80 runners taking part in the 5k, 10k or children’s run. As ever we had a mixture of runners and walkers, some on their first outing in Methlick, some for years past. With the wet weather earlier in the week we had to amend the usual loop of the cricket pitch, but around 10 o’clock the large snake of runners set off on their way towards Gight. As you can hopefully see from the photos uploaded on Photobucket there were many smiles and the weather was kind and we stayed dry throughout.

As ever once back from the run there was plenty of tea and cake in the Scout Hut for everyone.

 

Thanks to everyone’s efforts we have raised somewhere in the region of £1,500 which is a truly fantastic achievement for our wee run.

 

A list of the first 10 runners back in both the 5k and 10k runs is attached. Apologies if names and times don’t quite match yours. Rather than printing out certificates, we decided this year to send blank certificates electronically, to help save ink and paper.

 

I hope to see many of you again next April for our 9th event.

The Ellon Cinema team will be back next Sunday with another two films for the community to enjoy:

Duck Duck Goose (PG) – 3 pm

Peng is a freewheeling bachelor goose who’d rather do anything than practice for the upcoming migration. He thinks he’s better than everyone else and spends his time attempting crazy stunts at even crazier speeds. In one such stunt, Peng flies too near the ground, hits a flock of ducklings and separates brother and sister, Chao and Chi, from the rest. In this unlikely meeting, Peng will begin a journey that will break his wing and nearly break his heart as he grows to understand the power of unconditional love in the form of two ducklings, who likewise grow to see him as the best father they could ever have.

The Shape of Water (15) 6pm

From master storyteller Guillermo del Toro comes The Shape of Water, an otherworldly fable set against the backdrop of Cold War era America in the early 60s. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Doug Jones. Nominated for 13 Oscars this year receiving winner of Best Film, Best Directing, Music (Original Score) and Best supporting Actress.

Barthol Chapel Church – Notice of Open Meeting, 30th April, at 7:30 pm

You are invited to an open meeting on 30th April at 7:30 pm in Barthol Chapel church to start a discussion about options for the church building and whether there is any desire for it to become a more flexible space, suitable for wider community use, whilst remaining a place of worship.

The church is the biggest public building in the community and it is greatly underused. It is about 21 x 8.6 metres, almost the size of Inverurie swimming pool (25 x 9m).

There is work needing to be done on the roof and exterior walls of the church and so this seems a good moment to think about how we can maximise use of the space. With some internal alterations – initial suggestions include improved heating, a level wooden floor and removable seating – it could become a really useable, accessible community asset.

Access to the school is limited to term times, evenings and weekends so at present Barthol Chapel lacks all year round access to a large community space.

This is just the beginning of a conversation about if and how the building might be adapted. The first thing to discover is whether there is any need or desire for such a plan.

We would very much like to hear your opinion, ideas, comments and any concerns, so please come along, if you can, on Monday April 30th.

The meeting is in the church so you can explore the space and imagine its potential.

The Ellon Cinema volunteers return from the easter break with three films for the weekend for the community to enjoy:

Saturday, 14th April – 7 pm – Mary Magdalene (12A)

An interpretation of the story of Mary Magdalene by Helen edmunson and Phillipa Goslet. Set in the Holy Land in the first century, a young woman leaves her small fishing village and traditional family behind to join a radical new social movement. At its head is a charismatic leader, Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix) who promises that the world is changing. Mary (Rooney Mara) is searching for a new way of living, and an authenticity that is denied her by the rigid hierarchies of the time. As the notoriety of the group spread and more are drawn to follow Jesus’ inspirational message, Mary’s spiritual journey places her at the heart of a story that will lead to the capital city of Jerusalem, where she must confront the reality of Jesus’ destiny and her own place within it.

Peter Rabbit (PG) – 3 pm

Based on the books by Beatrix Potter: Peter Rabbit  his threes sisters: Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton Tail and their cousin Benjamin enjoy their days harassing Mr McGregor in his vegetable garden. Until one day he dies and no one can stop them roaming across his house and lands for a full day or so. However, when one of Mr McGregor’s relatives inherits the house and goes to check it out, he finds much more than he bargained for. What ensues, is a battle of wills between the new Mr McGregor and the rabbits. But when he starts to fall in love with Bea a real lover of all nature, his feelings towards them begin to change. But is it too late?

Walk Like a Panther (12A) – 6 pm

A ‘community spirited’ film where a group of 1980s wrestlers are forced to don the lycra once last time when their beloved local pub is threatened with closure. A heart warming story providing plenty of laughs, featuring that money grabbing villain again, who you can’t wait to see get his just deserts.
